The 10 Series family includes a range of "General purpose" numerical controls for the control and synchronisation of motion. Applications for machining and deformation of material, for woodworking or pipe bending, or for handling and assembly, such as packing or palletisation, are just a few examples of applications of the 10 Series GP controls in industrial automation.

1. The 10 Series GP is a numerical control range with an open architecture that allows the maximum benefit to be obtained from all the advantages which derive from the use of a standard PC hardware platform. The power of the microprocessors used and the availability of standard peripherals make the 10 Series GP systems the ideal solution to best satisfy applications where advanced control of motion and the need to manage a large number of inputs and outputs is a requirement of the system.

2. In the definition of STORM the programming language of the 10 Series GP controls, particular attention has been paid to the ease of learning, while the same time not neglecting, the flexibility which a "General Purpose" numerical control programming language must offer.

3. The internal interpolation and synchronisation algorithms of the axis include a series of mathematical transformations which enable the 10 Series GP controls to manage robot machines with cylindrical, Cartesian and SCARA geometry, as well as automatic warehouses served by transfer elevators.

4. The real-time DOS environment integrated in the control and WinLink, the powerful PC workstation, integrated in the 10 Series operator panel, offer the ability to use standard programming languages for the personalisation of the operator interface using the Windows environment.

5. The integration of the standard Ethernet communication channel in the 10 Series GP, allows the creation of a distributed numerical control architecture connected by the network to a single operator panel which carries out the functions of operator interface and supervision of the production line or system.

From the open architecture...

1
The 10 Series GP numerical controls have been developed to exploit to a maximum the characteristics common to all the products of the 10 Series family: the power and computation speed of the PC based hardware platform and the extreme flexibility of the object oriented software architecture lend themselves to easily satisfy the increasingly demanding performance and customisation requirements needed for special applications in industrial automation.

2
The 10 Series GP open architecture numerical controls are available in different hardware configurations for the synchronisation of up to 6 axes. The power and flexibility of the Multi-tasking programming language STORM, which is "BASIC like", in addition to the control and synchronisation of the axes, permits direct access to the control peripherals and the peripheral devices of the system. The extended data memory and programmes available on the hard disk integrated in the control allows the running of complex programmes and makes it possible to manage extensive data, minimising machine down times due to changes in product format. STORM programs can also be generated automatically by the control by means of the "autoteaching" function and the subsequent automatic generation of the profile by means of spline interpolation.

3
Over and above the advanced functions of axes synchronisation such as Master-slave, potentiometer axes and linear, helical, cylindrical and spline interpolation, 10 Series GP controls include mathematical transformations dedicated to the world of robotics: Cartesian, cylindrical and SCARA.    The management of machine functions (I/O, security, sensors, etc..) is implemented by the powerful integrated PLC that allows the separation of the logical part of the system from the purely industrial one.

... to distributed architecture

4
The proprietary multi-DOS real-time software architecture of the 10 Series GP controls, makes it possible to offer a familiar DOS customisation environment, integrated with the system, in which all control information is easily accessible via function libraries. The WinLink operator panel is, on the other hand, the best solution for applications in which the power of a Pentium PC integrated with the control is necessary to install commercially available CAD-CAM packages or customised operator interfaces in the Windows environment. In such cases, an extended DLL communication library allows the application to communicate easily with the numerical control using the Ethernet communication channel.

5
The intrinsic capabilities of the Series 10 family of numerical controls can be best be seen in those complex applications composed of several simultaneous processing units. In such cases the application can be managed much more easily and flexibly by splitting it into more functional modules controlled by the distributed architecture of the 10 Series GP controls. Classic examples of such applications are linear or rotating flexible transfer and robotic lines. Each 10 Series GP control manages one or more elementary processing units and a single WinLink operator panel co-ordinates the synchronisation between the various controls via the DLL interface library.

The transfer of data and programs on the control can be carried out using the "GP Utilities" software utility which connects to a PC by means of an RS-232 serial line or an Ethernet communication channel. In the case of a network connection, the standard "Client-Server" functions integrated in the numerical control, make the transfer of programmes and data between the controls and one or more WinLink operator panels or PCs, instantaneous..

The GPView utility makes integrated remote diagnostic functions available. This makes it possible to interact with the numerical control, using a remote PC connected via a Modem, in order to identify and possibly solve problems occurring on the machine.
